Project Overview
Nestled along the picturesque shoreline of the San Francisco Bay, Richmond is a city steeped in history and rich in natural beauty. However, in recent years, the city’s landscape has become dominated by heavy industries, casting a shadow over the lives of its residents. Amidst this complex urban tapestry, a project seeks to breathe new life into the community by reintroducing the once-thriving flower industry.
Drawing inspiration from the rich agricultural heritage of Richmond and the enchanting allure of flowers, the project explores the intricate relationships between residents, industries, and urban infrastructure. It celebrates the historical and geographical advantages of the city, weaving together a colorful tapestry of flower cultivation, market, and recreation.
A Land Bank organization is envisioned as the catalyst, collecting and leasing available land resources to planters while also nurturing their knowledge and passion through an Education Center and an Exploration Center. The project envisions a flower industry chain consisting of flower cultivation, market, and recreation, with interconnected spaces to facilitate operation and experience.
The spatial scheme takes into account Richmond’s resources, such as soil and irrigation, and integrates existing infrastructure systems for water supply, transportation, and recreation. The introduction of a flower calendar helps identify suitable flowers for different areas, promoting planting availability and environmental benefits.
This project aims to empower local residents, enabling them to reclaim their urban environment while coexisting harmoniously with large commercial entities.
